The Healthier Weight Centre is unique in that it offers the entire range of interventions, both medical and surgical, designed to reduce not only weight but also the associated health risks. This approach makes good sense from a clinical perspective, as there is growing evidence that early intervention in the seriously obese translates into long-term economic benefits in terms of reduced healthcare costs.

Obesity in the UK has reached epidemic proportions and now represents the country’s most urgent public health challenge. Indeed, the House of Commons Select Committee inquiry into obesity, published last year, painted a grim picture of what is likely to happen if we fail to act. To quote from the summary:
“On present trends, obesity will bring levels of sickness that will put enormous strains on the health service, perhaps even making a publicly funded health service unsustainable”.
The same report estimated that the economic cost to the country of overweight and obesity is around £7.5 billion.
