What is Lithotripsy?
Lithotripsy is the non-invasive destruction of stones by pressure waves. These waves are focused onto the stone with the use of Ultrasound and X-Rays. The pressure waves travel through the body tissues without damaging them, and reduce the stone to fine gravel which may then be passed naturally in the urine over a period of time, usually with no pain.
Lithotripsy has transformed the treatment of stones since its development in the early 1980's, where previously a major 'open' operation may have been necessary.
