No Link Between IVF and Breast Cancer
The Princess Grace Hospital
In an article due to be published next month in The International Journal of Fertility & Women's Medicine, Professor Kefah Mokbel, Consultant Breast & Endocrine Surgeon, at St George's & The Princess Grace Hospitals, Professor at Brunel Institute of Cancer Genetics & Pharmacogenomics, and his team have reported no significant association between in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment and increased risk of developing breast cancer.
The authors examined all studies published to date. The combined analysis included about 72,000 women who had IVF. The risk may be increased in women with a family history of breast cancer.
'Future research should focus on the type of fertility treatment used and breast cancer risk since the risk seems to vary with the type of drugs used.. A new class of drugs called aromatase inhibitors should be evaluated further as safer alternatives to standard ovulation-inducing drugs'. Prof. Mokbel stated.
